DIY OATMEAL BODY SCRUB

Around this time of year our skin begins to feel a bit used and abused from soaking up the sun and saltwater.  The beauty industry can be a bit overwhelming not to mention expensive, so we decided to put one of grandma’s home remedies of almond oil, honey and oatmeal to the test.  Though most of these ingredients are common household products I was completely unaware that they were so beneficial when treating the skin.

The skin saving properties found in raw (untreated) honey are endless and have been wildly used for centuries by beauties like Cleopatra.  Being anti-microbrial and rich in antioxidants, honey is great for helping heal damaged, sensitive skin.  Commonly known for being a natural humectant, it has the unique ability to attract moisture and seal it in leaving behind a natural glow.  The key here is to purchase “raw” honey.  Unfortunately the healing benefits can be compromised once the honey has been treated or heated.

If you have oily skin, you might at first feel wary about putting any kind of oil on your skin. However, the acne-forming oil that is produced by your skin is very different than say processed almond oil used in a recipe like this.  With acne, some people are more prone to produce a sticky oil called sebum that can clog the pores with dead skin cells and other debris. However, the fatty acids in almond oil actually help eliminate the sebum that your skin naturally produces, creating cleaner skin and pores, and helping to get rid of acne. Basically it effortlessly cleans pores and helps nourish the skin.  If you can’t find almond oil at your local health food store feel free to use coconut oil or even olive oil.

Oatmeal is the other main ingredient in this scrub.  It is full of anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds, perfect for soothing and moisturizing; dry, irritated and sun damaged skin.  Combined with the almond oil and honey this oatmeal scrub left our face feeling soft, soothed, moisturized and completely refreshed.  This oatmeal scrub recipe couldn’t be more simple and makes more than enough, so we recommend paying it forward by gifting some to a dear friend.

INGREDIENTS

2/3 cup oatmeal – ground finely in blender

1/3 cup raw honey

1/3 cup almond oil

DIRECTIONS

Stir ingredients together and spoon into a small jar to store.  Massage a small dollop over your face avoiding the eyes.  Rinse with water and follow up with your favorite moisturizer.
