CLEAN AND SAFE SUNSCREENS

The skin is the largest organ of our body and can easily absorb anything and everything we put to it’s surface; so it’s nearly impossible for me to ignore the long list of ingredients found on beauty product labels these days. In the past it’s been tricky to find products that are not only safe to use on my skin but more importantly effective at doing what they say they are going to do.  Our generation is full of educated awareness which has forced companies, new and old, to evaluate their process, ingredients and packaging.  So fortunately for us sourcing clean, safe products that will perform is becoming more and more accessible.

The EWG is a wealth of knowledge and information when it comes to health and wellness.  They are a non-profit, non-partisan organization that is dedicated to protecting our health and the environment.  They have carefully tested and rated thousands of products (makeup, sunscreen, cleaning products, etc.) and specify the exact concerns within each ingredient.  If you ever bored go to their site and type in some your go-to products to get the nitty gritty facts.  Fair warning you might not like what you see and more than likely will end up frantically purging all of your products and end up making a big (and spendy) online purchase.  We recommend taking note of some products worth switching out, finding new ones worth adopting, and making a gradual and lasting transition into a cleaner, healthier, sustainable skin-care regimen. You’ll feel great about supporting mindful companies who are putting the safest ingredients forth, while genuinely nourishing your body on the outside as well.

The EWG recently released their approved list of sunscreens for 2015.  According to their findings “fully 80 percent of 1,700 products examined this year offer inferior sun protection or contain worrisome ingredients like oxybenzone and vitamin A”.  Reading labels can be more than overwhelming so we thought we’d do some extra research and share our tried and true sunscreens within their approved and guilt-free list.  Scroll down for more info…

FAVORITE MOST TRUSTED SUNSCREENS

  1. Babo Botanicals Clear Zinc Sunscreen SPF 30 Gentle enough for the face and body and great for all members of the family (babies, kids, sensitive skin, etc.)
  2. Brush on Block SPF 30 We get so much sun exposure just out and about (think driving, park, walking to and fro) so I keep this handy brush in my purse and reapply to my face and hands throughout the day.  And as an extra bonus it’s the only sunscreen that Felix giggles hysterically and willingly allows me to put on him.
  3. Suntegrity 5 in 1 Moisturizing Face Sunscreen SPF 30 Traded out my primer, moisturizer and foundation for this all-in-one tinted moisturizer.  Plus I love the dewy glow it leaves behind.
  4. Chocolate Sunless Tanner This paraben-free tanner is a year round staple of mine.  It develops naturally and gradually (and streak free), just like the tan Mother Nature would give you, without the harmful UV rays that is.  In the summer I apply it two to three times a week before bed.
  5. Aqua Sport Broad Spectrum SPF 30  This is a tried and true, burn-free, week long surf camp approved. i.e. rubs in, stays on, water and exercise approved!
  6. Badger All Season Sport Stick SPF 35 Perfect for my surfer boys as this stays on all day long.  It’s thick and nearly impossible to rub in (or take off) so I only apply to the face and ears.
  7. Juice Beauty SPF 30 Sport Has a nice, light citrus-herbal scent.   Seeing that it’s the “sport” edition it’s perfect for the beach or pool as it’s water resistant for 80-minutes.

WHEN SHOPPING FOR SUNSCREENS…

  • say yes to zinc oxide (which is EWG’s first choice for sun protection) as it’s stable in sunlight and can provide greater protection from UVA rays than titanium oxide or any other sunscreen chemicals. read more…
  • avoid Vitamin A (aka Retinyl palmitate) which is an antioxidant that combats skin aging, but studies indicate that it may trigger development of skin tumors and lesions when used on skin in the presence of sunlight. read more…
  • purchase SPF 50 or below.  read more…

I was just reading up on EWG’s guidance this week and have a shopping cart going. I’m so glad to see a recommendation for sunless tanner… Since Portland really leaves to no choice.
